Construction Business Cards Should Look Professional
70If you’re in the construction industry and do a lot of face-to-face interacting with homeowners then you probably already understand how important it is to act professional and to look like you have your life and business in order. What you may not already know, though, is that your marketing materials are just as important as your personality when it comes to your company’s image. This is particularly true when it comes to construction business cards.
I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, but I have seen a lot of business cards from home improvement professionals that are absolutely terrible from a design and information standpoint, and it never seems to dawn on these people that their card is actually tarnishing their company’s image instead of enhancing it. When you think about your marketing approach always try to look at it from the customer’s point of view. If you were them, would you call somebody back whose card had misspellings on it? Probably not. Would you give them a chance to remodel your kitchen if their card made their company look like a chaotic organization? No. Would the fact that their construction business cards make absolutely no mention of insurance or bonding prevent you from awarding them the work? Quite possibly. Would you laugh in their face because their card has a corny Mickey Mouse cartoon on it? There's a high probability.
If this advice rubs you the wrong way and you’re a contractor then, odds are, your cards are probably poorly thought-out and you’re one of the people that most needs to hear this. Either you can allow it to dent your ego or you can take it for what it is and make the improvements that are necessary. We can’t all be marketing geniuses but if you can be receptive to constructive criticism then it will help your business tremendously, and that’s what it’s all about. I’m not here to stroke your ego; I’m here to help you make more money with your construction business. It's a good lesson in life overall. The prideful will fall because they refuse to listen to criticism, while the wise will prosper because they place more value on success than on ego. Okay, I'll jump off my soapbox now. Just try to humble yourself a little bit and I know that your marketing efforts will become much more effective.
So here are a few guidelines for how to set up your business card in a professional manner. I would go with a simple, easy to read design with a white background. Stay away from fancy or corny looking font or images. If you must put an image on the card make sure it occupies only a small space and accurately reflects your business. Putting your name and phone number on the card is important, of course, but don’t forget to also include other methods for contacting you like an email and website address. Don’t forget to include qualifications and information about how you’re insured and fully covered. Finally, if you can boast any awards or company commendations I highly recommend including those, as well. They will go miles in helping a potential customer to trust you.
Those are some of the basics but I’m sure if you really put your mind to it you can come up with additional methods to make your card look more professional and high-quality. Remember that a construction business card is a reflection of your company and should be treated with the same attention to detail that you give to other aspects of your business. Image is everything in business, so don’t be afraid to spend a little more time and a little more money to ensure that all your marketing materials are as effective and impressive as possible.
